Schools and Parent Involvement

In celebration of Governor Lynch’s “Parent Involvement in Education Month” Proclamation for October 2008, the Parent Information Center, in collaboration with the NH Department of Education, have sent a resource packet to every school in NH to support outreach to families. Activities range from small steps (such as displaying the "6 Things Teachers Can Do to Promote Parent Involvement" poster) to more comprehensive options for strengthening your school’s parent involvement program.

The Parent Information Center and NH State PIRC are available to you should you want support on how to take your school-family-community partnership efforts to the next level. Please feel free to call us for a free consultation at (603) 848-5665.

Message from the Commissioner to NH Schools

DOE

Dear School Principal and Staff,

When it comes to children’s success in school, no school can do it alone.  That is why the NH Department of Education is joining Governor Lynch and The Parent Information Center in celebrating October 2008 as “Parent Involvement in Education Month.”  I’d like to invite you and your school to join us in honoring the various ways that families support their children’s education.

The Department of Education is proud of NH’s professional educators and has confidence in the high quality of instruction they provide. However, there is always room to extend the school community to embrace and involve families more effectively. Research shows that the most accurate predictor of student achievement in school is the extent to which families are able to create a home environment that encourages learning and become involved in their children’s education, in both the school and community.   Seasoned teachers have always known this and the most successful ones are those who reach out to families on a regular basis.

The NH Department of Education is collaborating with the NH State PIRC program at the Parent Information Center to bring you resources for your staff and educators that will assist them in boosting parent involvement. We hope you can use the opportunity “Parent Involvement in Education Month” provides to highlight that parents make the difference!

We recognize that the task of realizing the full potential of parent involvement will require education and awareness at home and in schools, in addition to a firm commitment in our educational policies and frameworks. Please consider finding a way to mark October as “Parent Involvement in Education Month.”

Thank you for all you do to create a rich school community that embraces families and supports the unique learning potential of each child.
